How to add a watermark, caption or logo to a video
A name or logo on a video credits your work, labels a clip, or makes it harder to pass off as someone else's. The aim is a mark that people can read without it getting in the way.
Text, a logo, or both
Type a name, a caption or a web address, add a logo, or use both. When you use both, the text sits under the logo. Long text is made smaller to fit inside the picture, so keep it short and easy to read.
Where to put it
A corner is the usual choice because it stays clear of faces and action. Pick the corner where the picture is calmest. The middle works for a clear label on a short clip but covers what people came to see.
Size and how solid it looks
Small is enough for a credit; large suits a title. Lowering the solidity lets the picture show through and looks lighter, but keep it high enough to read. White text and black text both get a thin outline of the opposite colour, so they stay readable on light and dark scenes.
Logo tips
- A PNG with a transparent background looks best. JPG and WebP also work.
- Pick a logo file under 5 MB; a simple one at a modest size is plenty.
- Wide, flat logos read better at a small size than tall, detailed ones.
What a watermark can and cannot do
The mark becomes part of every picture, so it cannot be switched off afterwards. That discourages casual reuse, but a determined person can still crop or paint over it. Keep your original without the mark so you can start again.
