How to compress a video without uploading it

Most online video compressors work by uploading your file to a server, compressing it there and sending it back. That's slow for big files and means a copy of your video sits on someone else's computer. Compressing in the browser avoids the upload entirely.

How it works without an upload

Instead of sending your file anywhere, this page works on the video right on your own device and hands you the result as a download. The site has no upload feature and no server that receives videos.

Check it yourself

  1. Open your browser's developer tools (usually F12) and go to the Network tab.
  2. Load the compressor, choose a video and compress it.
  3. Watch the list: you'll see the page's own files load, but no request carrying your video. The size of any request is shown, and none will be anywhere near the size of your file.

What is still processed

"No video uploads" isn't "no data at all". The website host (Cloudflare) sees ordinary request information such as your IP address and which pages you load. The site may count anonymous events such as "a compression finished", never with any property of your video. If advertising is switched on, ad partners process information under their own policies, with your consent where the law requires it. The privacy policy spells this out.

Limits of the approach

  • Your computer does the work, so speed depends on your device. Recent computers are much faster than older ones.
  • You need a recent browser. Current Chrome, Edge and Safari work.
  • Very large files may not fit in memory on some devices. If that happens you'll see a message rather than a silent failure.
